Mount McKinley: A Journey to the Top of America Mount McKinley, also known as Denali, is the tallest mountain in North America. Standing at a whopping 20,310 feet above sea level, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel both incredibly small and super inspired. Located in Alaska, Denali is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve. If mountains had resumes, this one would probably start with "Aspiring to touch the sky, literally." What’s in a Name? Let’s clear up the name confusion. Mount McKinley was named after President William McKinley in 1896. Fun fact: McKinley never even visited Alaska. In 2015, the mountain officially went back to its original Koyukon Athabaskan name, Denali, which means "The High One." Kind of fitting, don’t you think? Because, well, it’s really high.
