Welcome! Teaching the English language is a fun and rewarding career. You have the privilege of seeing your students grow and the opportunity to spread your knowledge. But how do we make this work in the classroom? Check out these tips for how to teach English and things to avoid when teaching ESL. Basically, the dos and don'ts for teaching English as a second or foreign language. The three do's for teaching ESL: take it student centred; always have a lesson plan, and have fun! For the three don'ts for teaching English abroad, watch the video! Visit the blog post after for more resources. Want to find out more? So today, I'm going to share a few quick tips for teaching English ESL, EFL, whatever you want to call it, either in your home country or in a different country. First, I have three do's. The first do is to make it student-centred. Remember that the students are the ones who need to learn english. You are already quite good at English if you are a teacher so students should be doing the hard work, not you. Choose games, activities, and things to do in class where the students are talking and interacting with each other. Writing, reading, listening, as long as they're doing most of the work, then you'll be good to go. Alright, the second one. Always have a lesson plan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcTLTCjtRJo&t=1s). I know it can be tempting and even students will sometimes say that they want this. They just want to do free talking.. They want to do free talking. However, it's not actually the best for the students. Each lesson you go into should have a focus. It should be like a particular grammar point or a vocabulary set or to work on some sort of reading skill or writing skill, etc. Always keep that in mind. Third, have some fun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mymqu9kimsY&t=3s), of course, when you're teaching. Nobody likes a boring teacher, a boring lesson. So yeah, include some games and activities in your classes to make learning English fun for the students and of course mix things up as well. Let's get into the don'ts for teaching English. The first one is don't talk too much. This kind of goes into the other thing I mentioned about student-centred teaching but whatever you do, the students should be talking more. If you have say more than three students in your class, get the students talking to each other instead of to you. That will increase student talking time and decrease teacher talking time which is the goal of any language class. Number two: don't do the same old thing every day. The same old thing often involves powering through a textbook, day after day, after day which can get really boring for the teacher as well as the students so mix things up. Bring some interesting games and activities into your classroom. Number three: don't be tempted to cover too much. My theory about teaching English is that it's better if students know a few things really well than everything kind of not at all. So review a lot. That's my plan and also just slow down a little bit, give students time to process, to understand. So while doing that, combined with review means they'll leave your class with some solid things to grasp.

What’s graded language? It’s talking more slowly and using simpler language when you’re talking to someone who doesn’t speak English as their first language. That’s the basics for using graded language in the English learning classroom. Watch along and check out the blog post for great tips on graded language and why you should use it. Help students learn English more effectively by using graded language. -------------------------------- Learn about teaching ESL speaking here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj0oeSRfKt8&t=4s ------------------------------- Want to find out more about using graded language? So today I'm going to talk graded language for English teachers but it could apply, of course to any language teacher, Italian or Spanish, Chinese, whatever you're doing. What is graded language? Graded language is moderating your speech in terms of either speed or difficulty of grammar or vocabulary. Why would you want to do this? You'd want to do it if students are not fluent, which is the case if they're in your class. So think about if you've ever been in language class yourself or, I'm sure you've had students who've had this experience. The teacher is just talking and the students, on their faces, you can kind of see the deer in headlights. It's just too much information coming at them too quickly and it's too difficult and they're not actually taking in anything. As teachers, of course, we want to avoid this and the way to do this is to grade your language. People have to walk before they can run. How to grade your language? Talk more slowly. The second thing is to use simple grammatical constructions. Very simple sentences, maybe not complicated ones that use clauses and that kind of stuff. And then also think about simple vocabulary words. How not to grade your language? Don't use baby talk. Nobody wants to hear baby talk. Don't drop articles or things like that. That's just a very strange way to talk and also you don't need to talk more loudly. Talking loudly does not help. Alright, so that is it for graded language. I hope that was helpful.

Today I'm going to share a quick activity called five senses. It's great for teaching English learners. You can use it as a quick warm-up or kind of a time filler. There are a ton of different ways to use this activity. You just have to bring an object into the class and I'll use the example of a can of coke and then students have to think about their five senses and then use words to describe that object. So I usually put students into pairs or groups of three or four and they can do this either by speaking or by writing. It's up to you, it doesn't matter for this activity. For example, I'm kind of doing this on the fly so be kind! Anyway, the can of coke, sight or seeing. If you look at the can, you could use colours to describe it like red and white, the writing on it you could describe that. You could say it's like a cylinder or like a tube it's like. It looks metallic on the top. Any of those words, so just kind of descriptive words to describe it. The smell, you could say it smells kind of like sweet or licoricey or I don't know. I feel like it tastes or smells a little bit like metallic or something because of the cans when you first put it to your mouth so any of those words. It tastes, I don't know, I don't like coke that much so I think it tastes bitter and like kind of harsh. Some people think it tastes sweet, and some people think it tastes delicious. I don't know, there are a million words you could use to describe how coke tastes or like fizzy. Fizzy I guess is really another good word. And then touch, touch is interesting you could say like it's liquidy or it's like fizzy or bubbly or yeah, so there are lots of words for that. Hearing is the last sense. So you could say like when you open the can, like the pop or like a pop or snap or something like that. Then when all the fizz comes out, it's kind of just like a rush of air or like a bubbly sound or something like that. You can do this with any object and of course, not all the things might apply so if you don't do a food or drink, obviously taste is kind of a weird, weird one because like who's gonna lick an eraser or like taste an eraser or a pencil or whatever. So you could just say like turn it into the four senses activity instead of the five senses or whatever, you know. Okay, so that's just a simple activity that is a time filler or warm-up. Try it out with your students and I think you'll like it. I always have a really good time and my students always come up with very creative words and they're actually way better at it than I am. I should have actually filmed them doing this for this video because my words are not as amazing as what they come up with usually. Alright, so if you like this video please hit like, subscribe, leave a comment below and tell me if you've tried it and what you think about this activity. Also, be sure to check out my book 101 ESL Activities for Adults. You can find it on Amazon. Alright, until next time. Thanks everybody, bye. So I get students to, often I'll get them to work in pairs in bigger classes and they have to think of a secret job. And then write down some sentences as hints. They have to think about the job, and what the people have to do. So for example, a teacher has to help people. And they could write a more general or a more specific question kind of depending on what they want. But I say, you shouldn't say they have to teach people because it's too obvious. So they should give a little bit more of a general one. Teachers don't have to drive a car and then teachers mustn't be mean. So you can think of any hints that you want and then after all the students have done that, they can join together with another group and then they give the hints to each other. Or, in smaller classes, you could just do this together as a whole class. Flyswatter is the ultimate activity if you want to create some kind of fun and excitement in your classes and I know when I describe it you might think "oh this sounds like a great kids activity", however it works for everybody. I've used it with kids teenagers, university students, and adults, and everybody has really enjoyed it. It's basically a vocabulary activity. So all over the white board write down a bunch of words that students are familiar with, maybe that you've taught them in the previous weeks. Kind of space them out at random intervals and then divide the class into two teams. One student from each team comes up to the white board give them each a fly swatter and then for absolute beginners you could simply say the word Tuesday. The first student to slap their fly swatter on Tuesday gets a point for their team and you can either erase the word and put a new word or just leave the word there. It's up to you kind of depends on the level and then also how many vocabulary words you have higher-level students. I often give hints, I would say something, like "it's the day after Monday" first student to slap Tuesday gets a point and then those students go sit down, and then the next student on their team comes up to the board.
