Labour legend John Prescott dies at age 86: Who was the former deputy prime minister?
Tributes have been pouring in after Labour Deputy Prime Minister Lord John Prescott died aged 86. Prescott, who was MP for Hull East, was also the UK’s longest-serving deputy prime minister, holding the post throughout Tony Blair’s New Labour government from 1997 to 2007. Prescott was born to a working-class family in Wales and as a young man worked as a ship steward and trade unionist. He was elected as an MP in 1970, before being elected deputy leader in 1994. After the 1997 Labour election win, he served as Deputy PM and worked on climate change, towards banning asbestos, and opposed the privatised rail system.
