This week the government announced a series of changes to the UK’s welfare system - which are expected to save more than £5bn a year by 2029-2030. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall announced a widely-anticipated string of changes in the House of Commons on Tuesday in what she framed as a bid to encourage more Brits back into the workforce. But experts have said around a million people in England and Wales will lose their disability benefits as part of the welfare overhaul, which includes tightening the criteria for personal independence payments (or PIP), the main disability benefit, which has sparked backlash, with unions and charities branding the decision “cruel” and “immoral”. And MPs - including those in the Labour Party - are already challenging the government over their opposition to the proposals.
