The Chancellor’s spring statement won’t “alter the basics” of the government’s public spending plans, Sir Keir Starmer has said. The prime minister insisted there were no plans to “undo” the “record investments” made to public services at the Autumn Budget - but that ministers were looking at how to “run the government more efficiently”. It comes ahead of Rachel Reeves taking to the despatch box on Wednesday to unveil her Spring Statement, when she is expected to announce spending cuts in some government departments, amid pre-announced reductions to the welfare bill and civil service costs. A new YouGov survey has also found 80 per cent of Brits believe the public finances are in a poor state, including 34 per cent who say they are in a “very bad” state – and just three per cent believing the government is in a good place financially.
